Workshop Series

Check out our asychronous computer science workshops!

This winter, we are offering asychronous computer science workshops! The courses include:

  • Ciphers: In this workshop students learned about ciphers, a way of writing secret messages. They learned to make and break ciphers with logic and a bit of programming.
  • Computer Vision: In this workshop students learned about computer vision, a field of computer science which focuses on how computers see and understand images and videos.
  • Scratch/Scratch 2: In this workshop students learned the basics of programming through a visual-based programming language called Scratch. Through Scratch they learned to instruct a computer to do cool things and build fun projects using these concepts.
  • Drones: In this workshop students used robotics and Scratch to program and fly minature drones!
  • Virtual Reality: In this workshop students learned about 3D graphics to build a virtual reality using block coding.
  • Datasets: In this workshop students learned about the Python library Pandas in order to extract, store, and manipulate large datasets.
  • Python Graphics: In this workshop students learned to draw graphics and create designs using Python.
  • Web Development: In this workshop students explored the basics of how to make websites using HTML and CSS.

Testimonials

From Charlie Bright, Principal at Bret Harte Elementary School:

"I still get upset as I think about my transition from elementary school to high school. I graduated from a Chicago Public School that was very similar to Bret Harte in regards to race and income. As I compared by elementary school experience to others, I realized that other students were exposed to so much more. Now as principal, I am always seeking to offer the very best to my students.

Introducing our middle-school girls to the world of coding is something that I fully support. There are so many tech careers out there, and African-American girls are underrepresented in this field. Exposure at an early stage can make the difference. In addition to the introducing our girls to coding, CompileHer will also develop our students' critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. I am also looking forward to longer-term connections with CompileHer. I love that they take the girls on field trips to tech companies and have special 'design days'."
