designHer Hacks 2020: To a greenHer future was an 8 hour event that took place on Sunday, February 23rd which was intended to introduced middle school girls from all across the city of Chicago to computer science topics in a fun and interactive way. All students had the opportunity to work in teams to design a technological product for a simple yet empowering goal: to create a "greenHer" future!
superpowHer was an 8-hour event that took place on Saturday, April 27th which was intended to introduce middle school girls from Chicago to computer science topics in a fun and interactive way. The theme of this event was superpowHer, where each girl was a superhero using the power of technology. The girls worked in teams to learn how to use technology through a series of hands-on activities led by the University of Chicago students and professors. The day began with a keynote speaker, and a lunchtime panel and discussion of powerful women.
compileHer will be offering a new computer science workshop series at Bret Harte Elementary school this winter for 6th-8th grade female students! Our 8-week program will be taught once a week on Tuesdays from 4-5:30 PM by undergraduate students from the University of Chicago. We will be introducing our students to a number of different technologies and applications of computer science. Students can expect to learn something new each week and come away with a portfolio of projects. This year's projects included:
dreamHer hacks was an 8-hour event that took place on Saturday, January 26th which was intended to help middle school girls understand the impact they can make on the world by combining creative thinking with technology. The goal of this event was to have our attendees design a mobile application that accomplishes a simple, yet empowering goal: to make a dream come true. All students had the opportunity to work in teams to design a product and present their creation in front of University of Chicago professors at the end of the day. We hope that each and every one of our hackers left the event feeling confident in their ability to better the communities they are a part of. UChicago FEMMES (now known as compileHer) hosted a field trip to Google's downtown office on November 28th, 2017 from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. The field trip included a tour of the office, an Hour of Code workshop, and a career panel with Google software engineers.
